HIAWATHA and WARPAINT
Two plays on the theme of identity
in 'the Round' at Holy Sepulchre
Thursday 16 April - Saturday 18 April 2009
7.30pm with a matinee at 2.30 on Saturday

Henry Wadsworth Longfellow's epic poem Hiawatha (1855) - was dramatised by Michael Bogdanov - and first performed at the Young Vic in 1978 and then by the National Theatre in 1980. Now Northampton's own Masque Youth Theatre have presented it
in the world famous Church of the Holy Sepulchre.
Using authentic tribal songs and dances, live percussion, simple props and staging, a cast of 20 performed the story of Hiawatha - native American Indian hero, legendary son of the West Wind, warrior with magical powers,
devoted husband to his bride Minnehaha, peacemaker and prophet.
Warpaint is a new play by local playwright Edward Toone.
The play used native American history as a backdrop for the 'tribal' warfare of contemporary school life and explored themes of truthfulness and courage, the search for identity and cultural heritage.
Tickets were priced at £6 and £5 (for concessions), from
the Masque Theatre Box Office: 01604 719365
or in person from The Works, Adnitt Road, Northampton.
Both plays were stunning, exciting and brilliantly performed by this tallented group of young people. The costumes were superb and, as usual, the Direction and stage management were excellent.
Here are the opening 10 lines of the 234 lines of
The Song of Hiawatha
By the shores of Gitche Gumee,
By the shining Big-Sea-Water,
Stood the wigwam of Nokomis,
Daughter of the Moon, Nokomis.
Dark behind it rose the forest,
Rose the black and gloomy pine-trees,
Rose the firs with cones upon them;
Bright before it beat the water,
Beat the clear and sunny water,
Beat the shining Big-Sea-Water.
