Northamptonshire Regiment

Holy Sepulchre is the Regimental Church of the Northamptonshire Regiment
originally raised as the
48th and 58th Regiments of Foot

Over the years the Colours (flags) of various Armed Forces' units
associated with Northamptonshire have been laid up in the church.

The Colours of the 1st Battalion (formerly the 48th Regiment of Foot )
were laid up on 14 July 1962 in the presence of
Her Royal Highness, The Princess Alice, Duchess of Gloucester
Colonel-in-Chief of the Regiment.

Princess Alice

The church then proudly displayed the following Colours :

48th Queen's and Regimental Colour (1838-1889)
48th Queen's and Regimental Colour (1889-1962)
3rd (Militia) Bn. Queen's and Regimental Colour (1887-1925)
5th (Service) Bn. King's Colour (1919)
6th (Service) Bn. King's Colour (1919)
7th (Service) Bn. King's Colour (1919)
1st (Garrison) Bn. King's Colour (1919)

These Colours can be seen in the photograph above.  Through age, or having been carried into battles, some were in poor condition and so, more recently, most have been carefully preserved under a suitably inscribed stone slab
in front of the altar in the Warriors' Chapel.

The 48th (1889-1962) pair remain on display, behind glass, in the Chapel:

The earlier 58th (1860-1962) pair were placed on loan at the National Army Museum on 17th July 1962.  After they had been repaired at the Royal School of Needlework and carefully conserved they went on public display.  A few years ago they were returned to Northampton and can now be seen at the Regimental Museum in Abingdon Park.
These magnificent Colours were the last of any British Regiment's Colours
to be carried, unfurled, into batttle.

An even older set of Colours (below), presented to the 58th in 1841,
were in very poor condition by the time they were replaced in 1860.
They are now preserved and on display in the
Auckland War Memorial Museum in New Zealand.
